The Prague Quadrennial launched a brand new project focused on light and sound design 36Q°. A site-specific exhibition lit up the unique space of Prague Exhibition grounds' lapidary. The exhibition ran parallel with a conference of theatre designers at the Czech Museum of Music.
November 8 – 12, 2016
The Prague Quadrennial hosted internationally recognized professionals working in the field of light and sound design, among whom the awardee of the prestigious Tony Award and OBIE Award 2006-7 for sound design Rob Kaplowitz, light designers Sarah EC Maines, Henk van der Geest and Nick Hunt, as well as set designer and professor at London Brufford College Kathrine Sandys. The Czech arts community were represented by Ondřej Růžička from Light Design Institute and Jakub Daníček from MetaMechanics.
The National Museum's Lapidary is a specific space full of ancient statues dating back to as early as the 11th century. The exhibition revolved around the theme of the potential of light, sound and new media in transforming galleries into dynamic and imaginative spaces, thus opening new perspectives on creative approach to set design.
Special guests of the International conference of light and sound designers were Tupac Martir, Rob Kaplowitz and Yaron Abulafia who came to Prague to give a talk about their work. Martir is a reputed author of stage designs for pop stars among whom Beyoncé, Sting and Elton John. Abulafia has gained reputation through his meticulous and sophisticated approach to light design, working for example for the Nederlands Dans Theatre and the Israeli choreographer Itzik Galili.
The project 36Q° developed one of the PQ's major program lines, one to focus on organizing smaller-scope events in between the culmination event of the very Quadrennial, most of them promoting the field of light and sound design.
